The filter in a KitchenAid dishwasher is located at the bottom of the tub, below the lower rack. Where to look on your model

Removable filtration system

Look on the dishwasher floor under the lower rack. This is the filter area at the bottom of the dishwasher; the removable filters sit here and can be lifted out for cleaning. KitchenAid product help

Maintenance-free system

Some models use a maintenance-free filter system. You won’t remove a full filter assembly on these. Instead, there’s a foreign object cup in the front, below the lower rack; lift it out to clear any debris if it fills. KitchenAid product help

Quick access and safe handling

1) Open the door and slide out the lower rack. 2) Look at the tub floor for the filter area. 3) On removable-filter models, unlock and lift out the upper filter assembly, then lift out the lower filter. 4) Rinse under running water; use a soft brush for stubborn soil. Do not use a wire brush or scouring pads. 5) Reinstall: make sure the lower filter is seated and the upper assembly is locked. Never run the dishwasher without the filters properly installed. How often should you check it?

KitchenAid recommends cleaning and maintenance about every 30 days for optimal performance. If you notice soil on dishes or hear unusual sounds, check sooner. KitchenAid product help

Variations and when to stop

If you see larger food particles, toothpicks, or other objects around the filter area, remove them by hand before taking the filters out so they don’t fall into the sump. If your setup doesn’t match the removable type described here, check your model’s user guide and follow its instructions. KitchenAid product help
