Describe the loaded item and its use
The empty shelf is only part of the load. Write down what it will hold, how far it projects, where its attachment points sit and whether use adds movement or pulling. A static decoration and equipment intended to support a person belong to different design questions. This guide organizes the information to take to a competent supplier or installer; it does not calculate an allowable load.
Identify the load-bearing construction
The visible wall finish may conceal a cavity, board, framing, solid masonry or hollow masonry. The fixing must be specified for the supporting construction and the actual application. Keep “painted wall” out of the substrate field: it describes appearance, not support. If the build-up or hidden services cannot be established, resolving that uncertainty is the next task, before a drill location is chosen.

A product family may contain different lengths, materials and approvals. Keep the exact fixing reference with the specified screw, installation method, substrate limits and other conditions. A load number without its test or design conditions is not enough. Do not multiply a headline single-fixing value by the number of holes to produce your own shelf rating; load sharing and the connection geometry still matter.

Make verification part of the handoff
Retain the supplier’s or installer’s selected specification, any relevant drawing, the exact product packaging and an installation record. Decide who is responsible for resolving substrate or load questions. Follow the inspection or maintenance instructions applicable to the installed system. These records also make a later change easier to assess: adding heavier contents is a new use, not simply the same shelf with a different arrangement.
