Describe the item and how it is used
Record the object, its loaded weight where known, attachment points and whether use adds pulling or movement. A shelf holding objects and a fitting supporting a person are not interchangeable applications.
Identify the wall
Separate the visible finish from the supporting construction. The fixing specification may depend on board thickness, masonry type, voids or framing. If those are unknown, a shopping list based only on screw length is premature.
Bring the specification together
Check the manufacturer’s supported substrates, installation method and limits for the exact product. Keep related requirements together, including screw compatibility and any edge-distance or embedment conditions. This article does not provide a substitute load calculation.

Define the stopping point
If the construction or hidden services cannot be established, stop planning the drilling step and obtain appropriate help. Preparation includes deciding what evidence you need before work can continue.
Keep substrate identification, product instructions, measurements, preparation photographs and observed results together. We do not turn a generic checklist into a structural or installation specification.
