Write down the job in one sentence
Name the joint, the two adjoining materials and what the area experiences in ordinary use. Add whether the finished joint must be painted. A bathroom fixture, a kitchen backsplash and interior painted trim can all need a neat joint while having different compatibility requirements.
Separate the claims on the packaging
Paintable, waterproof after cure, mold resistant and flexible describe different properties. None automatically supplies the others. DAP’s All Purpose RTV 100% Silicone is a concrete example of a product described as waterproof after cure but not paintable. Use that example to see why each requirement needs its own answer; it is not a recommendation for every wet-area joint.

Bring preparation and timing into the choice
Check the instructions for existing material removal, compatible surfaces, joint limits and application conditions. Then record the relevant wait before painting or water exposure. Do not buy a product around one attractive feature while leaving its preparation impossible within the project. Product and color variants can carry different instructions, so save the data for the one actually selected.
Keep the selected tube identifiable
Photograph the label or retain a clear product record, including the variant, date and location used. If performance later changes, describe the condition and whether the same place has needed repeated attention. A recurring problem is a reason to revisit the joint and its cause, not evidence that a larger bead is the correct next step.
